If you have lived in your home for many years, you may have accumulated a lot more possessions than you need or want. However, very often the task of decluttering a home can seem overwhelming, and so the issue may just go on ignored. The problem with that is, if you move house, you will have to deal with a lot of stuff in a short amount of time, often leading to decisions that are not so environmentally responsible.

One of the keys to decluttering without becoming overwhelmed is not to look at it as one huge task but to take a small number of items and sort through them. It may be a drawer or a section of your closet, something you can do in a short amount of time. It is also helpful to form piles when sorting through your things. You can form one pile for items you want to keep, another pile for items you wish to donate, and a third pile for yard sale items. Doing this will not only help you to declutter, but you will also be recycling the things you no longer want instead of throwing them in the garbage.
There are some things we keep simply because we don’t know what to do with them. The garage generally contains these kinds of items. It is a good idea to find out where and how to dispose of things like electronic equipment, batteries, used paint cans, chemicals, etc. If you know where to take them, you will be more likely to tackle the job of getting rid of them. Plus, if you move house, you will avoid taking these things with you or, worse still, disposing of them incorrectly.
