While unpleasant to think about, cockroaches can be a huge issue in many homes and apartments. These unwanted pests are known to spread diseases such as salmonella and dysentery and even cause allergies and asthma. Adding to the problem, they are not easy to get rid of as they can reproduce in an alarming amount, are able to exist on very little food and if you think they drown easily, think again! They can actually survive submerged in water for up to half an hour. Doing everything we can to prevent them from overtaking our home, as we can see, is very important. So, what are some ways of doing so?
Cockroaches love to be in dirty, greasy, moist environments. A dirty kitchen can be the ideal environment for them to thrive. Keep the kitchen as clean as possible. Give it a thorough cleaning on a regular basis. This will include cleaning kitchen cabinets, under the sink, and underneath and behind all appliances, even the refrigerator, and dishwasher. Keep the sink as dry as possible. Store food in sealed containers and keep a tight lid on the trash can and try not to leave pet food out. You might consider leaving lights on a night also as this will deter them.
We’ve mentioned that cockroaches love damp environments. Try to keep bathrooms as clean and dry as possible. Be aware that they can be found in crawlspaces also. If you notice leaking pipes or dripping taps etc. have them fixed as soon as possible and seal up possible entry points.
While these suggestions will aid in preventing cockroaches, what if you have a bad infestation? You will need to have the problem taken care of by a pest control company who knows the best way to treat the issue. Afterward, place boric acid in areas you’ve previously noticed cockroach activity which will help keep them under control.
